Meta: Who is Jude?
Jude and Zero are both such fascinating characters, but the character I have a lot of questions about is Jude. I think they boil down to: who is Jude, and what was Jude’s pre-s2 relationship with Zero? The two questions kind of overlap, but I want to concentrate on the first for now.
Who is Jude?
Zero calls him a junior agent (2.01); Derek calls him a ‘desk jockey’ (2.11); and Lucas says ‘wasn’t it just a year ago he was screwing up our coffee orders’ (s3). Also according to Jude himself, he was just assigned to the Arena as the agency’s ‘point person’ since they have two clients there now, but before that he hadn’t ‘always felt welcome here’ on his own (2.01) and admitted that he had to sneak in the night Olivia was murdered when he says he was on the arena floor because, as Det. Harrison said, Oscar wasn’t giving him that kind of access to the arena then (2.12).
Based on the above, Jude shouldn’t have been in a position job-wise (just a junior agent, desk jockey, got coffee) or location-wise (didn’t have access to the arena) to become friends, or even acquaintances with Derek or Zero. And yet he did.
Derek claims that Jude has helped him out before (getting him coke) and he needs him to help him out again (with Ahsha). Derek also says that besides him and Terrence, Jude is the only one who knew about the rift between them. But why would Derek have told him? Not just told anyone, but told Jude specifically?
Zero credits Jude with bringing him to LA. (2.01). The two of them talk about how hard Jude sold Zero on LA (2.03) and the fact that they came into this with a plan (2.07). After the prostitution scandal, Jude tells Zero that he would never leave him, and Zero says, “No, you wouldn’t; you never have. I don’t know what I’d do without you, Jude.” (2.08) You never have. I don’t know what I’d do without you. When was there an instance when Jude could’ve left Zero, but didn’t? Zero even references ‘the plan’ in 2.10 after he climbs out of Jude’s bed, and after the game in 2.12.
How does a junior agent/desk jockey/coffee boy manage to get in close with two pretty big clients of the agency?
Sure, Derek could’ve seen Jude around the agency, could’ve put two and two together and realized he was Oscar’s son, but why would he have trusted Jude to get him coke? And why would he have trusted Jude with the information on the rift between him and Terrence?
Zero played for Ohio, so he wouldn’t have seen Jude around the agency, though Jude might have traveled to Ohio with a partner to take notes, or something. But again, why would Zero have listened to Jude at all, much less trusted him and taken the LA deal?
This seriously has me scratching my head!!
Though I’ve come up with an idea and, while it doesn’t deal with Derek, would explain why Zero would trust Jude, and why he’d say that Jude would never leave him, he never has, and he doesn’t know what he’d do without him. Say it with me, college!AU. Yep. Jude met Zero in college (or hell, high school since I’m going to submit a HS!AU prompt to
smallfandomfest/
smallfandomfest come Nov 1) and they formed a relationship back then where Jude always had Zero’s back, and when he sees an opportunity for him in LA, he calls Zero up . . . .
My crazy AU idea aside, please chime in and tell me how you think Jude managed to get these people to confide in him/trust him!!!
