The Day in Spikedluv (Friday, Sept 19)

Today was a LOW-shopping day. *g* I hit the Pharmacy while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. I filled my gas tank and dropped a book off at the library on the way to mom’s.

I did a load of laundry (washed, dried AND folded), hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, paid some bills online, and showered. *whispers* I picked up more bbq chicken quarters for supper. Sunnycrest was having a Harvest Fest, and bbq chicken and pulled pork was part of that. The dinners were disappointing, but a night of not having to cook supper is still a win for me!

I read more fanfic and watched some HGTV programs.

Temps started out at 60.6(F) and reached 72.1. I had no idea it was going to be so warm in the morning! We were actually warm sleeping overnight because we’d planned for another 45 degree night.

Mom Update:

The Day in Spikedluv (Thursday, Sept 18)

This was a no-shopping day!! But I did get in a walk around the park while I was downtown. I also visited my aunt, hand-washed dishes, went for a walk with Pip and the dogs, put a chuck roast in the crock pot, and took mom to a dr. appt.

I finished the Duncan Kincaid book, read some fanfic, and watched some HGTV programs.

Temps started out at 45.1(F) and reached 78.4. I was not brave enough to wear shorts first thing in the morning, but I did change into them mid-morning! It was still only 64 degrees at that time, but much better than 45! I was glad later on that I had.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing pretty well in the morning, but she was exhausted by the time we got home from her doctor appointment. more back here )

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, Sept 16)

I hit Walmart while I was downtown and Stewart’s on the way home. I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I stopped by the library on the way home from mom’s to pick up some books. I grilled steak for Pip’s supper.

I started the next Duncan Kincaid book and watched an HGTV program.

Temps started out at 48.7(F) and reached 77.2. I wore shorts and a tank top out of the house in the morning despite the cool temps because I was determined to enjoy the later warm temps. (With a sweatshirt, naturally. *g*)

The Days in Spikedluv (Saturday, Sunday & Monday Sept 13–15)

First I have to say that the weather was fantastic! High 80s both days and I loved it. (Of course, I didn’t do as much walking as Pip did. o_O)

Saturday: I got up at 5:45am and we were out of the house by 6:45am. Our first stop was Cracker Barrel for breakfast as we headed out of the state. There was about 20 minutes of traffic back-up that was annoying. We reached Martinsburg, WV around 1:30pm and had lunch at Logan’s Roadhouse. (We like this place and get lunch there whenever we’re in the area.)

Fannish August

Work pressure didn't let up in August either, so the stress-watching continued.

TV new (finished)

My fascination with Nothing But You has now led me to trying out the leads' back catalogues:

Zhou Yutong was last in Will Love in Spring (on viki here), a 21-ep romance cdrama from 2024, starring Li Xian as her love interest, an embalmer who tries to see everything in life with equanimity and calm after getting into lots of fights in his youth and feeling responsible for his best friend's death. She's a successful sales person and workaholic who was in a car accident when she was 12, where her father died and she lost a leg. The story is very sweetly told, with lots of flashbacks and non-linear cuts. I watched the whole thing within a week and liked it overall. Some of the relationship dynamics and generational conflicts with their parents/grandmother were amazing, but the miscommunication between the leads got on my nerves, as well as the sometimes preachy dialogue about life and death from all characters. CW for death, since that's the theme of the show and some important people die. Last but not least: it gets extra points for having an actually hot sex scene - that's very rare for a het cdrama. There are many happy/cuddly/kiss scenes, too. I should probably make a kissy picspam post. :D

TV new (unfinished)

Amidst a Snowstorm of Love, a 2024 cdrama starring Wu Lei and Zhou Jianmai as successful (i.e. impossibly competent) billiard players. It's on viki. It was filmed in Finland, replete with lots of night scenes and snow everywhere (the BTS about that is funny because apparently it did not snow nearly enough and most of the snow is fake). It's based on a webnovel by MBFB, the same author who wrote Love Me Love My Voice, which was so low on drama it verged on boring, but I sat through the whole thing last year. Lets see if I can do it with the Finnish billiards romance, too. So far Wu Lei's subtle expressions are still holding my attention (and he's soooo pretty), but his character is the older one in the relationship, and he's very stoic, which just isn't Wu Lei. Plus there are some tropes I don't like - and I recognize them as typical for the author: both leads are hyper-competent, they seem to have an inhuman number of hours every day to do their multiple jobs and travel for six hours on top of that, there is a lot of eating/food conversation going on, the man does implausible romantic things for the woman while keeping important things secret from her, all the side characters are in favor of the romance and constantly commenting on it. I went into it expecting pretty much all of it, so it's not too bad. It turns out that watching characters play billiard tournaments is much less interesting than watching people cook (which is what Love Me Love My Voice did), but I have now started watching BTS material, which I found pretty interesting, especially the featurettes on the leads getting proper training in the sport. (Otoh, I have also been watching a ton of Dongji Rescue BTS material, and learning to freedive >> learning to play billiards, just sayin. ;))

I also started reading the novel the drama is based on, trying to figure out if some of the relationship setup things were better in the novel, but it turns out the drama is very very close to the novel, often scene by scene, including dialogue. Which is probably a good thing, because there is only a terrible MTL translation available of the novel (the title is "During the Snowstorm"). I actually needed the drama to explain some of the book scenes to me, because the translation was pretty much incomprehensible. /o\ I did not get to the kiss scenes in the novel yet, but apparently the drama was heavily censored and stripped of eight episodes to meet the episode limit requirements when it aired last year, so maybe there will be some more differences going forward. There are still a *ton* of kiss scenes left in any case.

I started Shine, BeOnCloud and MileApo's new BL (this is only on wetv). They're taking their mission statement to increase Thai soft power seriously and have chosen another political topic: 1960s student protests. I didn't like ep1 much, but have heard that they get better. I found ep2 better than ep1, at least, and have now watched through ep 4, but to me none of the pairings make sense, and I really do not like Mile's character in this. They're sexy together, no question, but I'm not happy about them just being sexually attracted to each other with no other connection - at least one of the couples has a love of literature in common, even though they never seem to agree on its interpretation. I hope I'll be able to finish it, despite the setup screaming tragedy for everyone. Not least because Apo is absolutely gorgeous and doing great in the role and I'm already halfway through anyway.

TV new (dropped)

I started Breeze By The Sea (on viki), a Taiwanese remake of the kdrama „Top Star Yoo Baek“, starring Puff Guo, who I really like. The first two episodes were so bad I had to push myself to continue, which really only worked because I was too tired to think of anything else to watch. It's about a burned-out asshole of a movie star being sent to relax on an island, at a guesthouse the female lead and her grandmother run. He slowly gets entangled with the locals and their problems, and slowly loses his asshole behavior. Unfortunately, that is very strong in the beginning, and I think unforgivable in places, so really wasn't enjoying his redemption as much as the show thought I should. Unfortunately, I also didn't find him attractive, and his acting was so-so. Puff Guo was wonderful as always, but she couldn't really save this on her own. I gave up on it after 7 (of 18) episodes.

Viki peddled My Girlfriend Is The Man! to me, a genderswap kdrama based on a graphic novel. Here on viki. The female lead turns into a man because of a genetic quirk that runs in her family - and episode one already conveniently ignores that everyone knew this was coming for dramatic reasons. Ooof. I made it through almost three eps, in fits and starts, and then dropped it. It seemed to always do the opposite of what I wanted it to do, gender-wise, while heaping on the embarrassment squick. Yes, it's embarrassing to suddenly have a different gender, but I'm interested in the repercussions for the main characters, not what the sister's friends group thinks about the new hunk, nor her constantly ogling her newly-male sister. Oi. I really wanted to like it. :(

I also tried an ep of Love is for the Dogs (also on viki), but it did not grip me at all. (I'm not a dog person, that might explain it.) It's obviously geared towards animal lovers, with many scenes of cute animals just for the sake of cute animals. If that's your thing, you might like it.

I checked out half an episode of Romance in the Alley, which in Chinese is just "Alley Family" or maybe "The House in the Alley" (Chinese is hard yo), so the romance part is almost certainly false advertising, but it looks interesting at first glance. It's supposedly a slice-of-life show about three families in an industrial town in the 80s. It won a bunch of awards, which is what alerted me to it. I hope I'll have the time/motivation to check out more of it, but the subs are terrible, so probably not. It's on youtube.

TV continued

My watchalong made it through three more eps of When A Snail Falls in Love, and we're mostly enjoying it? I've forgotten almost all the case details since I watched it last in 2018, and we're both enjoying Wang Kai's voice and face. Nothing much to report otherwise.

CDrama Parody: Dream Within a Dream

I ran across AvenueX recommending A Dream Within a Dream, and watched its first ep. It's a transmigration parody of Chinese costume romance dramas.

Hilariously, I had *just the day before* watched Love Like The Galaxy episode 6, which contained a "rescue the damsel from a fire" scene.

Compare:

It's virtually identical down to her dress. :D

I can't say I'm enjoying Love Like The Galaxy so far (12 eps in, of 56!), but that first ep of Dream Within a Dream (of 40 total) definitely made me laugh. I'll probably check out more of that.

The Day in Spikedluv (Friday, Sept 12)

I'm posting this tonight because I won't have time to do so in the morning.

I did not go downtown because I wanted to get stuff done before we leave tomorrow morning. o_O

I did two loads of laundry (both washed, dried AND folded), hand-washed dishes, swept the hallway/laundry/entry area, cleaned the sink and toilet, filled my gas tank, went on several walks with the dogs (and Pip when he got home), baked chicken for the dogs’ meals and cut up said chicken to cover meals for the weekend and when we get home, changed kitty litter, clipped Pip’s hair, packed, and showered.

I read more fanfic.

Temps started out at 48.7(F) and reached 74.8. Another lovely day. According to TWC app, it is going to be high-80s in Shepherdstown this weekend, which means 90+ in the sun. Sunscreen is packed!

We had more visitors last night (Thursday), but I forgot to include the photo, then figured that post was already long enough, so I'd include it here.

The Day in Spikedluv (Thursday, Sept 11)

I scheduled an appointment with Spectrum for today to check out something on Pip’s phone. Since I had to be in that area anyway (it’s the closest store to our house at a 45 min drive away; for you city folk, that's 45 min without traffic, not 45 min to go ten miles, which I still can't wrap my head around), I decided to do some other things while I was there.

First I had breakfast at Panera and used their wifi. (They were already out of my fave Panera breakfast, the souffles, when I arrived at 7:10 – they open at 7am. The woman who waited on me said that they opened to an order that took every one of the souffles. Which is fine, if they make more for their regular customers, which they didn’t do. That’s the part that annoyed me.) Anyway.

I made a quick trip to Walmart because I forgot to pick up more tomato soup for mom yesterday, and since that’s something that she can easily eat AND we used the last can she had at home, I wanted to make sure she had more.

I then visited an RV dealer. I have been looking at RV floorplans for years and wanting to visit this dealership to check out actual RVs in person. (If you don’t know, I have this dream of getting an RV (Class C) and driving Route 20 from the East Coast to the West Coast. Slowly. Taking time to see the sights (and maybe visiting people along the way) and just enjoying the ride, with no specific destination in mind. Aside from the West Coast. *g*)

I went to a local restaurant to get GCs for both of my sisters for their anniversaries (one I will be on time for, the other I am very late for). I was originally just going to get this specific GC for sister A, but I found out that Sister S also liked the place, so I figured, two birds, one stone. *g* They’ll both be surprised they got a GC that wasn’t available at the grocery store! (I may have also had lunch there. I had to check it out, right?!!)

Finally I got to Spectrum. I was 45 min early for my appointment, but there was no one else there so they took me immediately. Also, since there was no one else there, more than one service person weighed in on my issue. The fix is easy, but the whole explanation made my head spin. Phones, gah!

Back home, I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, swept and mopped the kitchen; mopped the bathroom, wiped down the bathroom sink, took the dogs for a short walk (and then went on a couple other walks with both Pip and the dogs), cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, scooped kitty litter, and shaved. Whew! That was a long ass busy day!

In fun stuff, I read more fanfic.

Temps started out at 45.3(F) and reached 77.6. It was a really lovely day out.

The Upcoming Weekend – Another Civil War Battlefield, Yay!: I’m not sure if I mentioned it, but we’re going away for the weekend. Another trip to Antietam Battlefield with a side trip to Shepherdstown, WV, where our motel is. It’s a lovely place, if in the middle of nowhere, and I would be looking forward to it if the timing wasn’t so bad, with mom getting so sick from her third chemo treatment and ending up in the hospital. I’d suggest canceling, but we already canceled our planned weekend in June because it was on the same weekend as mom’s surgery (we’d have been driving back on the Monday of her surgery and I wanted to be there). It will probably do me good to get away, but the planning for just a weekend away is stressful for me. I have two (counting today) days to get things done before we leave. o_O

Mom Update:

I did not get to visit mom today, but I called her a couple of times to check in. The first time (late morning) she sounded quite perky, the second time (late afternoon) she sounded like her energy was starting to fade. I know my sister visited her, so she did have some company during the day. ETA: I have learned that my other sister also visited, so she wasn't alone all day as I feared she might be.

The Day in Spikedluv (Wednesday, Sept 10)

I had a chiropractic appointment and a pedicure this morning. I had no plans to shop, but Pip needed shoe laces for his work shoes and since I wasn’t certain we had any at home (he tells me this when I’m dropping Grant off, so I wasn’t able to check before leaving the house), I wanted to pick up a pair just in case.

So I ended up hitting Walmart while I was downtown (and picked up a few other things while I was there) and I got in a walk around the park. I stopped at the farm stand and at the veterinarian (for Ti’s special dog food) on the way home. Later in the afternoon, on my way home from mom’s, I checked at Sunnycrest and they finally have the beef sticks Pip likes back in stock!

I dried and folded mom’s load from yesterday, hand-washed dishes, cleaned off another portion of counter, swept the bathroom, went on several walks with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals and cut up said chicken for said meals, and scooped kitty litter.

Once again, I read fanfic.

Wednesday Reading Meme

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: Copper Script by KJ Charles and True Gretch: What I've Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything in Between by Gretchen Whitmer.

What I am Currently Reading: I’m not currently reading a published book; I’ve been reading fanfic. (I had started Hid From Our Eyes (Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries) by Julia Spencer-Fleming but it’s not speaking to me right now (possibly because it’s the last book in the series until a new one is released in November) and I need to return it to the library, so I’m putting it off for another time when I’m in a better head space for it.)

What I Plan to Read Next: Another library book I have out or a book I just purchased. Depends on if I want to start a book now or wait until the weekend, tbh. I might just keep reading fanfic for now.
